What Is The Difference Between An Orangery And A Conservatory?
The two are very similar and both are types of home extension. A conservatory typically features a uPVC or aluminium frame and plenty of glazing, whereas orangeries are brick structures with slightly less glazing. Orangeries are also more likely to have a flat roof and pair well with roof lanterns. Whichever you prefer though, they’re both incredibly attractive and delightfully bright add-ons to your home.
I’m Interested In Replacing My Conservatory Roof, Will The Old Frame Be Able To Support The Weight?
Yes! If you’re interested in replacing your conservatory roof, you may be surprised to learn that the old frame should be perfectly up to the job. People sometimes assume that older conservatories are weaker, but unless the structure is damaged or compromised in some way, it should be perfectly capable of handling a modern roof.
Will I Need Planning Permission For A New Conservatory?
It’s unlikely, but we would always recommend checking first. Conservatories typically fall under the category of a “permitted development,” so rarely require planning permission. If in doubt, always consult with your local authority first.
Will I Need To Inform My Home Insurance Providers About A New Conservatory Or Orangery?
Yes, we would always recommend this. Once the construction has finished, your conservatory or orangery will form part of the main structure of the house and should be covered by any existing home insurance policy. But every provider is different, so always let them know as it may invalidate a future claim if they don’t know you’ve had an extension.
Do Conservatories Increase The Value Of A Property?
Yes, although it’s not an exact science and it’s impossible to say by how much. Conservatories and orangeries are highly sought after and can help increase the kerb appeal of a home, meaning you can ask for a higher price when the time comes to sell your house.
